Local leaders of the Karen National Union (KNU) in Ler Mu Lah Township have warned that there is a risk of a division between the local people and the KNU if the construction of the Tenasserim Dam continues, according to a Karen News report on May 3.
The KNU’s Saw Thein Su told Karen News that local people do not want the dam to be built, fearing that—to make way for the project—they will be relocated, their villages will be destroyed, and they will lose their lands and plantations.
The KNU’s Mergui-Tavoy District reportedly gave permission to the Italian-Thai Development Company until April to repair the road that accesses the dam site in Moe Ro village, on the lower part of the Tenasserim River.
The construction will reportedly affect 13 Karen villages at the upper dam site and 13 villages at lower dam site.
Karen News quoted villagers as saying that they were prepared to fight against the construction of the dam.
No quote was reported by the KNU’s central executive committee or any of its senior spokespersons.

I know what KNU wants to do, during the ceasefire according to economic reform and its reaction but, they have to pay attention to the citizens and SPDC,
we want to get what we want, so we have to know what we are going to lose, before we get what we want.
SPDC is more likely British Empire, it a player and we know that, we a rebel, we need a support and a encourage from citizen, we are not the enemy of citizen,
Everything we do, we will have advantages and disadvantages, so we have to do it wisely not to hurt the citizen, before it is too late.
Economic can lift you up, to get you stronger and stronger when politic can give you chance to do an Economic. But our political situation is not yet something that cable and strong enough to deal with any situation, so we have to make it stronger and cable to defend ourselves. But player want to win and try to get what they want and for theirs benefit-ion,
We have to make sure we don't step a bait circle.
