More than 4,000 residents of the Kachin border town of Loije fled to China Thursday evening to escape fighting between Burma government troops and the Kachin Independence Army, the Kachin News Group has learned.
Fighting began around 3 PM when an army column of about 200 troops entered Loije, an eyewitness said.
A refugee now in China told KNG that he and his neighbours evacuated Loije because they were afraid that the Burmese troops would kill them.
Most of the displaced residents of Loije have taken shelter in unofficial camps across the border in La Ying and the surrounding area. According to the refugees the only people left in Loije are Burmese troops.
Since fighting between the Burmese army and the Kachin Independence Organization began last June more than 4,000 refugees are thought to have sought temporary relief in La Ying. This number is thought to have nearly doubled over the past 12 hours as residents of Loije fled en mass.
Many of the Loije refugees KNG spoke to expressed their desire to return home as quickly as possible, once the fighting has ended.
